Customer name: Bly

Location: Pitcaple

Client brief:

The couple wanted to update both of their bathrooms to a more stylish and contemporary design. The bathroom downstairs had a sauna and shower in the centre of the room, which disrupted the flow of the space - and although the sauna was a much loved feature, the area was used to create a separate utility room for housing the laundry appliances with an additional sink and tap, and giving the couple additional storage. Their upstairs bathroom had a shower over bath, which they wanted to change to a separate bath and shower enclosure to make the shower easier to access.

Challenges:

Downstairs, the client wanted to add a utility area, so we had to reduce the size of the bathroom slightly to allow enough space for stacking appliances, a worktop and a new sink. However, the main challenge of this project was ensuring everything fit suitably in the upstairs bathroom. Working with a more modest space can be tricky - especially when adding a separate bath and shower as opposed to upgrading a shower over bath.

To overcome this, we built out part of the wall which gave way for the shower plumbing and made a nice recess for the freestanding bath. There was also an existing recess in the wall which we fitted with bespoke Nobilia furniture, including spacious drawers and a made to measure mirror. The basin and wall-mounted tap enhance the cosy farmhouse aesthetic the couple envisioned, while the addition of a niche next to the bath adds extra functionality.

Design process

The couple really liked colour and wanted to incorporate this in both of their bathrooms. This allowed us to create something different to the popular grey toned bathrooms which are so prominent at the moment. The visuals our designer created on the design software look almost identical to what the client decided to go with, as they even chose the same colours of paint.

The upstairs bathroom featured stunning oak trusses which we paired with oak look furniture and shelves to really stick with the cottage feel. To add some colour, we chose dusky clay paint which complements the beautiful teal and blue hexagonal tiles in the recessed area for the bath, as it features subtle touches of a similar colour throughout the pattern.

For the ground floor bathroom, we used gorgeous terrazzo tiles from Ca’pietra to bring a playful sense of pattern to the space. This looks very striking against the wooden panel effect tiles from Saloni, and the forest green vanity unit. For both of these spaces, we worked alongside GJS Joinery for the installation, which was completed to a very high standard.

Final solution

Overall, both bathrooms meet the client’s brief of a fresh face lift with a contemporary but cosy feel. By utilising the space effectively, we were able to incorporate a separate bath and shower enclosure in the upstairs bathroom without it feeling too cramped. Its look and feel is a lovely nod to the cosy country farmhouse style, which we achieved through wooden flooring and furniture to complement the striking oak trusses.

The incorporation of colour and pattern adds depth to the space, making it a lovely setting to relax and unwind at the end of a day. The downstairs bathroom is certainly a brighter and more lively space with the beautiful terrazzo tiles installed on the wall and floor. Complemented by the forest green unit and wood effect tiles, this room has a subtle nod to nature and would be ideal for getting in the morning or utilising as a guest shower room.

“It was really lovely to see these spaces come to life because the customers loved the visuals so much, so it really felt like we were bringing the exact design from the screen into the real world. I also loved having two separate bathrooms to work with, as it meant I could incorporate lots of different design elements. It’s not often you get to use a lot of colour. The upstairs bathroom is my personal favourite, the decorative tile around the freestanding bath creates a really cosy space, perfect for relaxing!”
